Last Sunday, the community of Ballyduff paid tribute to those who fought and died for Irish freedom in the Easter Rising of 1916, by holding a commemoration in the village and unveiling a commemorative stone outside St Michael’s Hall.

Led by a piper from the Irish Defence Forces, a parade marched from River Action to St Michael’s Hall, where the commemoration took place and the commemorative stone was unveiled. The event, which was made possible following a number of local fundraising events earlier in the year, was MC’d by Michael Walsh, Chief Executive of Waterford City & County Council.

In his speech, Mr Walsh said: “It probably worth considering a little what Ireland of that time was like and reflecting on where we are now. We obviously had a very different society in 1916. The things we so much take for granted in terms of technology, transport, communications, all of those things, though not entirely absent, were nothing whatsoever like what they are today.
