Kilworth native John Allen secured the biggest win of his professional jockey career last weekend, when he rode the winner in the Australian Grand National Steeplechase.

Onboard Wells, a first-time steeplechaser, John claimed the top prize-share in the $250,000 race for trainer Kathryn Durden, in what was the 149th running of the National.

In the process, Allen and Wells denied the favourite Bashboy, who was fancied to complete a historic third-straight Grand National Steeplechase.

In the five-horse field, Allen patiently pursued the frontrunners for much of the 4,500m race at Sandown Racecourse, Melbourne, waiting until the final 200m before making his move.

With a concession of nine kilograms on Bashboy, Allen crossed the line with a comfortable six-lengths to spare.

Allen now has 19 wins in 2014, with eight alone coming in July.
