A fun ‘summer stars’ reading programme aimed at encouraging children to keep reading over the long summer holidays has been launched by the Cork County Library Service.

The Summer Stars Reading Adventure will run until the end of August in all county libraries, both branches and mobile, this summer. Children can call into their local library and collect a registration pack and reading card.

Cork County Council’s Arts Office will be holding a summer-long selection of complimentary events including writing workshops for children, arts and crafts and musical performances.

Summer Stars is part of the national Right to Read programme that aims to promote literacy and reading development for people of all ages and backgrounds. Registration is free of charge, and each child who takes part will receive a certificate of achievement at the end of the summer.

“Sunmmer Stars Reading Adventure is a great way to empower young minds through the magic of storytelling,” County Mayor Danny Collins said at the launch of the programme this week.

“Summer Stars offers an enjoyable way for children to maintain their reading skills throughout the summer while discovering the pleasure of reading, whether it be through a library book or eBook. Our Library and Arts Service is committed to nurturing a love for literature and empowering young minds through the magic of storytelling.”
