There was a major boost for Watergrasshill-based company Kepak this week with the announcement that it has landed a lucrative Burger King contract that will see it supply the fast food chain's Irish and British restaurants with beefburgers. Kepak says all of its beef will come exclusively from Irish and British farmers.

The move is essentially a winning back of the contract pulled by Burger King from the ABP Group in January after ABP was involved in the horse meat scandal. Kepak purchased the Silvercrest beef burger plant at the centre of the controversy from ABP.

The move had been signalled for some time but was subject to approval by the Competition Authority. The contract is understood to be worth in the region of €40m. It consolidates Kepak's position as the third largest operator in the Irish beef sector.
