Extra road markings will be put in place at junctions along the M8 in north Cork and South Tipperary, in an increased effort to stop motorists travelling the wrong way down the motorway.

Remedial works will be carried out on the junctions in the coming weeks, according to a National Roads Authority spokesperson. This action has come after local councillor Kevin O’Keeffe brought attention to this issue at November’s meeting of Cork County Council’s Northern Division.

A fatal crash on the M8 between the junctions for Fermoy and Mitchelstown last August, which saw a man in his 20’s killed, was caused by an elderly woman driving the wrong way in her Toyota Land Cruiser. The woman was also injured in the accident.

Cllr O’Keeffe called for increased signage on the road, as well as a detailed health and safety audit on the traffic entering and exciting roundabouts and interchanges along the M8.

“I have tried it myself and it is easy to turn onto the wrong road, if it was a foggy night for example,” he told the meeting. His motion was supported by his fellow councillors and it was agreed that a letter requesting a safety audit from the NRA would be sent.
