Education has taken a hands-on role at Bartlemy National School in recent weeks, as first and second-class pupils have been raising their own brood of chicks.

Eight young chicks hatched in the classroom a few weeks back, and since then the children have been feeding, playing with and looking after them.

The chicks provide an opportunity for the children to witness first-hand the behaviours and characteristics of the chicks, as well as learn the responsibilities of caring for an animal.

According to teacher Emma Savage, the chicks will be moved outside in the coming weeks, with a hutch being built to house them. She said it was an excellent way for the pupils to learn more about wildlife and nature.
