A garda in his 30s is recovering in hospital following an incident outside Lismore on Tuesday night.
The garda was injured when the patrol car he was in was rammed by a high-powered saloon car as a gang made to escape the scene after gardaí were altered to suspicious activity in the area.
The incident occurred near Ballyrafter at around 10pm on Tuesday, following weeks of burglaries in the local area. It is understood that an Audi A4 saloon deliberately rammed the patrol car in an attempt to flee the scene.
The garda suffered non-life threatening injuries in the collision, but was taken to University Hospital Waterford to receive treatment for back, neck and arm injuries.
The car, containing three people, managed to flee the scene but was later located and will be subject to a technical examination.
A series of burglaries have been recorded locally in recent weeks in West Waterford in Lismore, Ballyduff, Cappoquin, Ballysaggart and Melleray as well as in Fermoy, Mitchelstown, Ballygiblin, Kilfinane etc. Gardaí say they do not believe the various incidents are linked.
