For many hurlers and fans of the game in throughout Limerick city and county, last Sunday may not have been a high point, but for one young Galbally camogie player it was a day she will never forget.
Anna-Rose Kennedy had the honour of being the only Limerick player to score any goals in Croke Park on August 18, when she took to the pitch during half-time to play against Clare. Twenty players from all over Ireland and one from the UK donned the Clare and Limerick jerseys for the game.
Anna-Rose was selected for the Limerick team as part of the INTO/RESPECT Go Exhibition games for the GAA and was one of two girls from Limerick to play on the day, while there were also girls from the 32 counties and even one from the UK.
While the senior game saw Clare win 1-22 to Limerick's 0-18, Anna-Rose's three goals meant that at half-time, Limerick were the winners with a score of 3-2 to Clare's 2-1.
The 12-year-old also gained €15 on the day, as her father Patrick had put a €5 bet on with her that she wouldn't score any goals in Croke Park - so Sunday brought with it three prestigious goals and also a nice little addition to her purse.
Following her display of great camogie playing, her parents Helen and Patrick also received a number of congratulatory texts - some saying that perhaps Limerick would have fared better if Anna-Rose had stayed on after half-time to help the Limerick lads out.
The young player has been playing camogie for four years with Galbally National School under school principal and coach, Martin Kearney and Anne Halligan, and also with Galbally Camogie Club under the guidance and coaching of Jack Dillon.
She will be starting in John the Baptist Secondary School in Hospital in September and her parents are hoping that her debut last weekend is a sign of things to come.
The young Kennedys all seem to have a flair for sports. Caitlin (11) is an All Ireland primary schools handball champion with her doubles partner Denise Mullin, while Paddy (9) is a Limerick county U9 handball singles champion and so with the help, advice and guidance of Jack Dillon, the Kennedy youngsters have thrived, both on the fields and in the courts.
