Fermoy swimmer, Owen O’Keefe, is the first European male to complete an outstanding 42-kilometre swim, taking on the Río de la Plata, which links Uruguay and Argentina in South America.
A renowned open water swimmer, taking on this challenge further strengthened the connections between Ireland and Argentina, and the Blackwater River and Río de la Plata, as he dedicated the swim to Patrick Rice (RIP) of Fermoy and Buenos Aires and his wife, Fátima Cabrera’s work for justice for ‘the disappeared’ of Argentina.
Patrick and Fatima, survivors of the Dictatorship in Argentina (1976-1983), were kidnapped by Argentine police in Buenos Aires on October 11, 1976, thrusting them into a nightmare of torture and disappearance that seemed to have no end.
