Avondhu Blackwater Partnership, Fermoy, has initiated a major clean-up project in the housing estates around the town. A large group of skilled workers – working with Avondhu Blackwater Partnership under the banner of the Tús Community Employment initiative – have been assigned to the estates, with the twin aims of rejuvenation and enhancement.

Rathowen, Glenabo Heights, Thornbury, Rathcarrig, Dun Eala, the Uplands, Baile Árd, Barry’s Boreen and the Meadowlands, have all been targeted under this new project. Valerie Murphy, CEO of Avondhu Blackwater Partnership, asserts that while litter collection is the central objective of the project, ‘the vision is much larger and greater than that, and the work that the group has undertaken so far speaks for itself’.

OBVIOUS BENEFITS

In order to enhance local estates for residents, the Avondhu Blackwater workers are edging kerbs and borders, mowing lawns where required, landscaping – if locally desired – and removing unsightly weeds and excess litter. Most notable was the recent concentration on the Dun Eala estate, where a strong effort was made to improve public areas. Jim Condon, Dun Eala resident, commended the workers who put such immense time and effort into improving the estate for all living there, and highlighted the benefits of such an initiative.

The clean-up, according to Avondhu Blackwater Partnership, will not only improve the local environment for one and all, but will position the town as a standout in the region, inspiring other towns and communities to launch similar initiatives. They paid thanks to team members Michael Ahern, David Noonan, Ciaran Hanley, Graham Bayley, Vincent Frawley, Shane Flaherty, Eamon Dillon, Paul Coupland, David Clarke, Dermot Hegarty and Patrick O’Brien, for their ongoing efforts, and also to former mayor of Fermoy, Olive Corcoran, who had a strong influence in the early stages of this project.
