Fermoy Councillors funing that speed ramps not installed

The lack of action by Fermoy Town Council in installing a temporary speed ramp, has caused frustration and anger amongst local residents and councillors.

Local councillors Noel McCarthy and Tadhg O'Donovan were fuming this week to find out that a ramp that was to be installed on a temporary basis at Bachelor's Walk at the back of council houses on Oliver Plunkett Hill in Fermoy, wasn't done.

17 residents, concerned that their narrow road was being used as a rat run by motorists trying to avoid traffic congestion caused by flood works at the bridge, signed a petition calling for the ramp to be installed. On foot of that, Cllr. Noel McCarthy tabled a motion for a town council meeting which was seconded by Cllr. O'Donovan and passed unanimously.

"LET DOWN"

Both were taken aback this week to find the ramp was never installed. Locals told the councillors that they'd been told by the council that there was no need now to install the ramp, as works on the bridge have been completed.

"We feel let down by the town council. It was unanimously passed," Cllr. McCarthy said. Cllr. O'Donovan agreed, "It seriously questions the role of the town council if motions are passed and then not acted upon," he said.

Local resident Trisha O'Carroll, who organised the petition, said their road is being used still as a shortcut by motorists, especially on busy days like Fridays and Saturdays, when Oliver Plunkett Hill is congested with traffic. Cllr. McCarthy said they could have gauged how the ramp was working if it had been installed with a view to keeping it there permanently, given that traffic appears to be using the route more often now as a shortcut. "We could have judged how effective it was. I want to know why this wasn't done," he said.
