Fermoy Business Action Group this week unveiled their plans to celebrate Christmas in the town this year.

A festival will run over two weekends, Saturday and Sunday, December 7 and 8 and again on Saturday and Sunday 14 and 15. It will centre around a traditional Christmas market, with the streets of Fermoy transformed by all of  the attendant festive sights, sounds and aromas.

Food stalls will serve up culinary treats and festive fare while market stalls will offer local artisan produce, arts and crafts and handcrafted gifts. Carol singing and choral recitals will add to the atmosphere and story-telling will be offered at Fermoy town library, giving the festival a real community feel.

Most importantly, of course, is the main man, who'll be in situ at his special Santa grotto right in the centre of things.

The business action group is calling on all retailers to get involved in a 'blitz' shopping weekend on the 7th and 8th to encourage and welcome locals and visitors to the town to shop. Local restaurants and publicans are also being encouraged to surprise and delight with festive menus and Christmas cheer during the two weekends.

One publican who has already embraced the idea is Tom Aherne from the Wagon Tavern, who is organising Santa's visit and stay. The big man in the red suit has a surprise up his sleeve for children during his stay in Fermoy. He'll have a chocolate-making factory and visiting chiildren will be able to make their own chocolate creation or bar!

To get people in festive mood and prepare the town for Santa's visit, the switching-one ceremonies for the Christmas tree lights will take place on Thursday, December 5 in three different locations in the town. Ceremonies will take place in the same places as last year, at the town hall at 5pm, on Oliver Plunkett Hill on the Dublin Road at 6pm, and at Shinnick's Cross on the Cork Road at 7pm ensuring a real community feel to the proceedings.

A meeting of the Christmas Lights committee will take place in the premises of Oaktree Financial Service in Kent Street on Tuesday next, November 19 at 10am. All members are asked to attend.
