The Exam Helpline 2014 opened this Wednesday, 13th August, offering advice, information and support to Leaving Cert students who received their exam results.

The 1800 265 165 Freephone helpline is available to take calls from students, parents and teachers, seeking advice and information on what choices are available to students going forward.

Last year the service dealt with thousands of queries regarding third level courses, the points system, repeats, rechecks, CAO procedures and further training options. In recent years the number of calls to the helpline has increased greatly, showing the need for a personal touch at the end of a phone line to help parents and students during what is often an extremely stressful time.

SIX DAY HELPLINE

“It can be a very stressful time for parents and students as they work out their options, and speaking to a qualified guidance counsellor is an invaluable source of accurate and up-to-date information,” commented Don Myres, president of the National Parent’s Council Post Primary, who provide the service.

“This year, the lines will be open for six days in total, from 13th August. The team will answer exam result queries on 13th, 14th and 15th and then help with CAO first round queries on August 18th, 19th and 20th,” he added.

Lisa Comerford, Consumer Marketing Director at eircom, supporters of the helpline, urged students to seek help from the qualified and experienced guidance cousellors who work for the service. “No matter how prepared students are, this can be a confusing and stressful time and talking to a professional can really help,” she said.
