Following a story in last Sunday’s Sunday World newspaper, the Diocese of Waterford & Lismore is calling on the Sunday World to retract what they refer to as ‘an erroneous story’.
The story relates to the trial of 65 year old West Waterford man Bartholomew Prendergast, who is to be sentenced next November for the sexual abuse and rape of three woman over the course of 12 years when they were between 9 and 15 years old.
In the course of the two-page story headed ‘I didn’t know he was a peado’, the newspaper reported that a priest, Canon Brendan Crowley, had referred Mr Prendergast to a psychiatrist.
“This report clearly states that Canon Crowley knew of the latter’s abusive behaviour. This news report is wholly incorrect and seriously impugns Canon Crowley’s good name and reputation,” a statement from the Diocese reads.
