On Saturday, June 15th Cruinniu na nÓg returns to Limerick with a fun filled programme of creative activities in venues across Limerick city and county. All events are free of charge, child-centred and activity-based.
Cruinniú na nÓg is a national initiative from Creative Ireland, that celebrates and encourages participation in culture and creativity through performance, theatre, art and music workshops, screenings, special interactive events and much more. It gives children and young people the opportunity to express themselves through a specially curated programme of cultural and creative activities where they can share their ideas, learn new skills and have fun.
Launching the programme for Limerick, the Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Cllr Gerald Mitchell said he recently enjoyed a special screening of a locally produced short film. “I was delighted to be in Killmallock recently to meet the 4th class students from Scoil Mocheallóg, who have made a short horror film with Emerging Limerick Filmmakers. I really enjoyed getting a sneak preview of ‘The Substitute Teacher….. from Hell’. It has given me a flavour of what young creative minds can accomplish when they are given encouragement and support,” said the Mayor.
‘The Substitute Teacher….. from Hell’ will be screened on Saturday, 15th June in the Friars’ Gate Theatre.
Etain McCooey, Arts Officer and Creative Ireland Coordinator with Limerick City and County Council commented; “In addition to the many film-based activities being coordinated by Fresh Film, this year’s programme has been expanded to include a wide ranging and exciting programme of arts events across the county. It is wonderful to see so many organisations involved in and supporting the programme, such as the Limerick Library Service, Belltable, Dance Limerick, Music Generation, Dochas Midwest Autism Support, Foróige Newcastle West, and Friars’ Gate Theatre to mention but a few.”
EXCITING PROGRAMME
The Arts Officer is encouraging children of all ages to get involved, saying, “There is something there for everyone.”
Abbeyfeale and Watchhouse Cross libraries will host story time and puppet making workshops, a Green Screen workshop for budding filmmakers will take place in Adare Library and a new podcast from Foróige Newcastle West and County Limerick Music Generation titled ‘The Gaggle’ will be launched on the day.
Newcastle west will also host singing workshops for all ages, while Rathkeale House Hotel will be alive with the sound of ukuleles. Dance Limerick is hosting a full day of events, as is Belltable in Limerick City, from the ‘Not So Silent Film Screening’ where local school children will demonstrate their foley artistry, to a teen music showcase where Limerick voices and bands perform their original music.
