Cork County Council collected no money from levies issued for property on the Derelict Sites Register in 2023, with the council ending the year with €362,000 in uncollected charges.

A report by the Local Government Audit Service (LGAS) found that just €28,000 worth of invoices were issued ‘with no amounts collected during the year’.

Councils around the country are audited each year to scrutinise their spending. Councils are expected to keep a register of derelict sites, and issue a levy of 7% on the market value of properties on the register.
