St Bernard’s estate in Fermoy has become the latest illegal dumping blackspot in the area, with a disused couch becoming the latest item dumped outside the council yard.

Following on from further litter items being dumped in the estate in recent weeks, Tidy Towns committee members are now calling for this to stop, and for those responsible to be ‘named and shamed’.

Chairman of the Fermoy Tidy Towns, Noel McCarthy and PRO Tadhg O’Donovan, have expressed their disappointment and disgust at the most recent dumping, which they have now had removed from the estate.

Cllr McCarthy described it as ‘totally unacceptable’ and says it is an ongoing issue. Last week local residents took it upon themselves to remove rubbish that was left in the same spot.

“We’re after speaking to residents, they can’t take it anymore, they’re very upset about it,” says Cllr McCarthy.

He says residents are afraid that more and more incidents like this will occur unless correct action is taken.

Mr O’Donovan has called for drastic action to be taken, saying the town’s appeal will suffer as long as illegal dumping continues.

“Some drastic action will have to be taken. There’s people passing up and down here everyday going up to the industrial estate. It’s an awful image to give of your town.”

The problem of indiscriminate dumping, in wooded and country areas, has long been a problem in the locality, but as seen by these recent findings, rubbish is being left in populated and busy areas.

Mr O’Donovan described it as ‘adding insult to injury’ by leaving rubbish ‘10 yards from the main council depot’.

He says the only action now is to name and shame those involved, and stressed that there are many people willing to get involved in this campaign, as these people are suffering from what is an ongoing problem.
