A Conna local, Margaret O’Dea, is raising awareness around text scams after falling victim to one which saw a five-figure sum taken from her bank account.
Earlier this month, Margaret was due to fly out of the country on holiday however, tested positive for Covid-19 and was isolating and recovering at home when she received a text purporting to be from her bank.
Speaking with The Avondhu, her son Ger explained this week that the text came in on the bank’s official texting thread.
“She had lost the money on the holiday and had a couple of days to go before being left out of isolation and the text came in on the official thread that all the Bank of Ireland texts come in on. She clicked the link and it opened up Banking 365, it was an identical page,” Ger said.
