Every household and work place can play their part in effective waste management by reducing the amount of material they send to landfill.

This was the theme adopted by pupils from St Colman's College, Fermoy at their very successful exhibition held in the school's Croke Library on Monday last.

Promoted as 'Junior Cycle Senior Cycle Recycle' the exhibition featured a number of artistic pieces made from recycled paper, timber and metal. Speaking at the launch principal, Veronica O'Donoghue said the awarding of a Green Flag was recognition of a sustained effort put in by staff, pupils, the students' council and members of the green schools' committee.

She went on to highlight the important roles played by art teacher, Geraldine Dorgan, Catherine Buckley, Cllr John Murphy and caretakers, Larry O'Hara and Noel Barry - sponsors who assisted with the exhibition were also thanked. Other guests who attended the launch were Fermoy traffic/litter warden, Margaret O'Mahony, Mayor of Fermoy, Cllr Olive Corcoran and representatives from the Fermoy poetry circle.

Cllr John Murphy said he was delighted St Colman's College, Fermoy had secured Green Flag status and he praised the students for their role in the success.

"The boys have enthusiastically embraced the ideas of litter control, waste management and recycling, a huge amount of work has gone in to this exhibition and I've been very impressed by what I've seen here today" Cllr Murphy said.
