Colaiste an Chraoibhin gear up for F1 national final

The students of Colaiste an Chraoibhin are gearing up for exciting times ahead, as they are through to the national finals of the F1 in Schools competition.

Just two teams progressed from the junior category of the regional finals in Limerick and this being their first entry, the members of the Silver Bullet team are delighted that they got through, as this was the school's first entry into the challenging and intensive competition.

The team is made up of second year students, Team Manager Luke Wheeler, Design Engineer Dara Murphy Young and Manufacturing Engineers Conor Healy and Krystian Winkler.

At the regional finals, their car raced through the 25 metre track in a time of 1.72 seconds, but Luke believes that they can improve on their car for the national finals and they are now working on shaving milliseconds off their race time.

Teacher Kevin Carey, explained that the team are using the latest Flow Analysis software to discover if their car can be improved for the next race day as the slightest modification to their car could make a huge difference.

Toss Bryan have kindly sponsored the manufacture of a test rig, so the team can physically test their car for air resistance. Team Silver Bullet are hoping that this might give them an edge in preparing for the final race day.

Entering this competition can become expensive, and Kartworld Adventure Centre sponsored the team, allowing their project to become a reality. Mr Carey added that a sincere thanks goes out to the local businesses that are assisting students of Coláiste an Chraoibhín achieve success in such elite competitions.

Team Silver Bullet will travel to Dublin on April 30 for the National Final, where their car will be judged on design, speed and the team's overall presentation of their car, from media coverage and creating public awareness about their participation in the competition to getting sponsors and using social media and websites to keep the public up to date with their progress.
