Chronic pain – Cork lady outlines her lived experience

Irene Hegarty is helping to break the stigma surrounding chronic pain as an ambassador during Chronic Pain Ireland's 2025 Pain Awareness Month campaign.

‘Beyond the Surface’ is the theme of Chronic Pain Ireland’s 2025 Pain Awareness Month campaign, which focuses on the hidden struggles of chronic pain and the stigma that surrounds it.

Irene Hegarty, a Cork City woman married to Castlelyons native, Pádraig Hegarty, is among those suffering with chronic pain, living with post-viral pain for the past three and a half years. 

Speaking with The Avondhu, Ms Hegarty explains that the main issue she experiences is constant, daily, and severe head pain and migraine.
