Delegates from China who signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Health last July, recently visited three facilities in The Avondhu area, at Conna, Mitchelstown and Fermoy.
The delegates who made the visit were Ms Jiang Zongmin, Senior Staff of Health Promotion Division, Shanghai Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning and Ms Liu Huilin, Deputy Director of Health Guidance Division, Shanghai Health Promotion Centre.
Their first port of call was to Conna Social Centre, followed by a visit to the LivingHealth Centre, Mitchelstown before then visiting Fermoy where they visited the Resource Centre on MacCurtain Street.
Here, they witnessed the ‘Singing for the Brain’ group gathering, who meet weekly in the old Welfare Home at Rathealy Road.
Ms Jiang Zongmin, Senior Staff of Health Promotion Division, made the observation that she was impressed by the considerable involvement of volunteers in the delivery of health activities and services in the community, which is not the case in Shanghai where services are more centralised.
She felt that the services were strengthened by virtue of the voluntary effort that is provided to health services in Ireland.
The Community Work Department, HSE facilitated the visit on behalf of the HSE and Cork City Council.
