Going up against 16 people from all over the world in Eger, Hungary, Mitchelstown man and Fermoy Karate Club instructor, Brian Toomey came away from the SKDUN European Open Shotokan Karate Championships victorious recently, claiming the European Champion title.
Brian told The Avondhu this week that the standard of competition was very high, as countries like Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary and Russia would benefit from a lot of Government investment in karate and it's hard for countries like Ireland to compete against this. However, he added that the Irish team have done well in Irish, European and World championships and they have been slowly getting more recognition for the minority sport.
There were competitors from 36 countries in the competition and Brian took part in the over 40 category of the kata discipline. So far, he has been lucky enough to see much of the world through karate and he was the only member of the Irish team competing.
Brian also won the World title last year, so he said that the European title was a great bonus on top of that. He will now once again be competing for the World title again this year, when they are held in Poland in July.
