As the area braces itself for what is expected to be the worst snow storm since 1982, heavy snow showers and blizzard-like conditions are expected with strong easterly winds on Thursday evening, continuing into Friday morning, causing significant snow drifts in many areas.

With a Red Alert weather warning in place for Southern counties from 16.00 this Thursday until 12 noon on Friday, many fixtures and events have been cancelled.

A number of drama festivals around the country have cancelled some of their shows – one being the West Waterford festival which was due to open in Ballyduff on this Thursday. Patrons will be notified regarding the programme for the weekend where possible and you are asked to watch the festival’s facebook page.

All schools in the Munster area have been ordered to close on Thursday and Friday. Bus timetables and air schedules are expected to be disrupted so it is important to check with the various service providers if you intend travelling. Bus Éireann has stated it will not operate any services in Munster or Leinster up until noon on Friday,

While most of East Cork woke to a blanket of snow on Wednesday morning resulting in perilous travelling conditions, the Mitchelstown/Fermoy area had, in the main, escaped up until late Wednesday evening. However, all that is expected to change overnight with anything up to 8 inches of snow expected. People are being advised not to travel unless completely necessary and elderly people have been advised to leave their heating on 24 hours a day.
