While Cork County Council say they will strive to keep ‘disruptions at an absolute minimum’ during roadworks on the N72 between Mallow and Fermoy, there is however, no alternative to road closures during the planned 14-week period of works.

This is despite local councillors issuing serious concerns over the proposed road closures, claiming they will have a detrimental impact on businesses in the area, particularly in Ballyhooly and Castletownroche.

Responding to suggestions of implementing a stop and go system, the council say certain stretches of narrow road along the route make such a suggestion untenable.

The pavement strengthening works are scheduled to commence in the coming weeks. The first section of works will take place at Lacknamona/Carrig, with an estimated six weeks completion time.

The detour for this will be via Oliver’s Cross on the N73 and/or the L1229 Skenkilla Cross to Castletownroche.
