Castletownroche native, Dr Bridget Maher from University College Cork was amongst the winners at this year’s Crystal Clear MSD Health Literacy Awards for her project, ‘CLAS – A mobile application’. At a ceremony in Dublin, Dr Bridget Maher was awarded for her project in the category, ‘Best Project in General Practice’.
The hospital discharge letter is one of the most important communications in healthcare. General Practitioners rely on the discharge letter to provide them with the information necessary for safe handover of patient care. This information needs to be accurate, reliable and relevant. In response to this, UCC School of Medicine developed The Cork Letter–Writing Assessment Scale (CLAS) to teach medical students how to write discharge letters and to improve the quality of hospital discharge letters.
Using mobile app technology, CLAS is a step by step checklist of content listed in the same order it should ideally appear in the letter. As a result of the new mobile application, the quality of discharge letters was significantly higher in the medical students who had used CLAS compared to those who had not used it.
Speaking about her win, Dr Bridget Maher, said: “I’m delighted to have won a Crystal Clear MSD Health Literacy award. It is an honour to be recognised for my work. The campaign has been a great success and winning this award means it will gain national recognition as well as raise further awareness of CLAS – a mobile application."
