Councillors in the Dungarvan/Lismore Municipal District have asked for another letter to be sent to the Dean of Lismore, in an attempt to shed light on the undetermined ownership of Tallow's Church of Ireland cemetery.

A motion on the matter had previously been brought to the council’s attention by Cllr James Tobin during the summer, and was brought up again by Cllr John Pratt at the November meeting of the council this week.

Cllr Pratt informed the meeting that the community council in Tallow has been maintaining the graveyard ‘to a certain level, but it’s gone back again now’. Asking for an update on the matter, he added: “We don’t even know who owns it, or even whose responsibility it is.”

He was informed by senior officers in the council that a letter had been sent to the Dean of Lismore, The Very Reverend P R Draper, but no correspondence had been received.

Expressing his concern that 'it’s like a jungle in there at the moment’ and that they must respect those who are interred there, Cllr Declan Doocey called for another letter to be sent on behalf of the community.

“I have been contacted by constituents who want to go in and clear up their own plots,” He said.

Damien Geoghegan paid his compliments to the community in Tallow for their work in maintaining the graveyard. An update will be provided at the December meeting of the council.
