A former Waterford U21 hurling selector has lauded the performances of the Déise’s most recent All-Ireland winning side, describing the 2016 team as ‘the best U21 team that was ever produced in Ireland’.
Cllr James Tobin was fulsome of his praise for the U21 team after they overcame Galway in the All-Ireland hurling final in Semple Stadium on Saturday.
“It was a wonderful display. In my 50 years of following Waterford hurling, without fear of hesitation I would say it’s the best U21 team that was ever produced in Ireland. This is, to me, the most outstanding U21 team you’ve ever seen.” He urged the public not to put too much pressure or expectations on the team, saying ‘their time will come’ when it comes to All-Ireland senior success.
Waterford’s goal power proved decisive in their 5-15 to 0-14 win over the Tribesmen, with goals coming from DJ Foran, Patrick Curran, and three goals shared between Ballysaggart brothers Stephen and Shane Bennett. 10 of the starting team hailed from West Waterford, including Ballyduff’s Michael Kearney, Tallow’s Jordan Henley and Shamrock’s Colm Roche.
