Leading the way locally in supporting the environment, Castletownroche National School have raised their third Green Flag at their school, this time for Water Conservation. The school have already secured Green Flags for Litter and Waste, and for Energy.
Castletownroche National School was one of a number of schools from the local area to receive a Green Flag, including Scoil Bhríde Rathcormac and Conna National School at a ceremony in the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cork earlier in the year, and on Friday they hoisted their newest flag.
Teacher Ms Howard, said the school has to complete various projects in order to achieve the Green Flag.
“We installed a water butt in the school, we had to record our water reading and we did a comparison from the previous year to see whether we reduced our water consumption.
“We identified and fixed water leaks based on our findings too. We also visited the Mill here, so the children could see how water can be used as a form of energy as well,” she said.
Members of the Green Schools committee thanked all the pupils, teachers and staff for their work in helping the school achieve their latest flag.
They thanked the Avondhu Blackwater Partnership for the tour of the Mill in Castletownroche and Christy Roche for his informative talk.
Next year’s flag, they added, will be based on travel, so the committee asked everyone to put in an extra effort to carpool, walk or cycle to school.
