This was the scene which greeted walkers at Coolrue-Coolmucky near Fermoy recently, over 200 tyres were dumped under the cover of darkness.

This is a very scenic area with the Galtees and the Valley of the Blackwater to be seen way off in the distance, it is a very quiet area and it is very popular with walkers heading for Carrig-an-Aifreann or to the waterworks at Knockananig.

Apart from the fact that the dumping is unsightly, as it is so near to the forest it could be a fire hazard.

Fermoy-based Councillor Noel McCarthy condemned the dumping incident this week and called for anyone with any information relating to the incident to report it to either An Garda Síochána or to Cork County Council.

“There’s been a significant increase in large-scale dumping, there was a similar incident last week just off the N72 outside Fermoy. We need to clamp down on these, but we’ll need the public’s help if this is to be possible,” he told The Avondhu.
