Mitchelstown CBS U15 football team.

Mitchelstown CBS U15 footballers have advanced to the Munster semi-final following their win over Mallow in last week’s quarter-final.

The game began with the wind blowing in the CBS’ favour, but despite this the boys started slowly. Mallow went 2 points ahead early on, but Mitchelstown gradually settled to their task. At half-time CBS led by 3 points, on a scoreline of 0-06 to 0-03.

Given that Mallow would have the benefit of the wind in the second half, there were concerns that this lead would not be enough.

Mallow began the fight back but were held at bay by some outstanding defence by the Mitchelstown boys. Turning defence into attack, Mitchelstown responded by scoring 2-01 without reply, with Cathal Harrington and Shane Murphy the goal scorers.

Mallow continued to fight hard for scores, but some strong defending and outstanding saves from CBS’ keeper Matthew Dawson Furey, meant they were limited to just a goal and a point for their endeavours.

As Mallow tired, CBS took advantage and a lobbed goal by Cathal Harrington and another fine point from the boot of Cathail O’Mahony completed the scoring. Mitchelstown finished winners on a scoreline of 3-09 to 1-06 to set up a semi-final date with either Ennis or Newcastlewest.

On Wednesday, Nov 13th Mitchelstown CBS U14 footballers took on Millstreet in the B cup competition. Mitchelstown started well with a number of fine scores from the forwards and the midfielders. In the early minutes Mitchelstown dominated possession, but in their first attack Millstreet scored a goal. Mitchelstown went on to miss a number of chances in the first half, and felt that they should have been ahead by more at the break. This pattern continued into the second half, and Millstreet were gaining more possession and putting the CBS defence under more pressure.

The game was still in the balance at this stage, but decisive scores from Mark Keane and Cathal Harrington changed it. Mitchelstown began to convert possession into scores and they gradually pulled away from their opponents to record an emphatic victory.

The U14 hurlers scored their third win from 3 played when they defeated Davis College, Mallow on Friday last, November 15th. Weather and ground conditions were ideal, and from the throw-in Mitchelstown were dominant. An early score from a Cathal Harrington free set the tone, and Cathal fired over a further 4 frees as Mallow’s defence struggled to deal with the industry of the CBS forwards and midfielders.

Two goals by centre forward Mark Keane and a fine point from Dylan McSweeney put Mitchelstown firmly on top. Mallow’s general play was not reflected on the scoreboard, and they were limited to 2 points in the half. This was due in no small measure to the excellent play of Matthew Dawson Furey and Sean Leonard who combined well to clear their lines, and to dogged defending by wing backs Kevin Noonan and David Hunter.

Paddy Piggott and Cathal Harrington dominated at midfield. Riain Hennessy and Dario Murphy Green worked tirelessly throughout, while in Dylan McSweeney the CBS had a livewire forward who was a constant threat to the Mallow defence.

The Mitchelstown boys kept up the great effort in the second half and scores included a well-deserved 1-01 for Jack Fogarty and a goal from Dylan McSweeney. Mallow replied with a point, but their play threatened much more. Danny McGrath impressed at corner back, while John Donal O’Brien made a fine save to keep Mallow at bay.

Overall, it was an impressive performance from the Mitchelstown boys and they deserved their convincing win. Tougher challenges lie ahead but they can be pleased with their work to date.
