The death of William (Liam) Coughlan after a short illness on February 15th (his 79th birthday) was received with profound sadness by the people of his native Tallow.

A welcoming face at the local AIB Bank branch where he worked for almost 50 years up until he retired in 1997, Liam spent all his years in Convent Street. He was very much part of the fabric of Tallow and loved nothing more than a good chat with his neighbours and friends.

Liam possessed a great sense of faith, aattending Mass on a daily basis at the Carmelite Convent and he was also a solid anchor to his beloved parish choir. It was very fitting that the choir he loved so much would pay him the highest tribute by their wonderful contribution at his funeral Mass.

An animal lover all his life, Liam loved the daily walk with ‘Skip’, his dog, around the ‘Boreen’ walk in the town. He will be sorely missed from The Latch Restaurant where he was a regular for his mid-day meal.

Liam was very good at electrical repairs and was often called upon to repair various items for friends and neighbours. His life revolved around his beloved dog Skip, whom Liam loved to walk twice daily on the new “Boreen” walk in Tallow.

While Liam had no immediate family, the large crowd in attendance at St Carthage’s Mortuary, Lismore was a  fitting testimony to the esteem in which he was held. Rosary was recited by Tallow Rosary Committee (Mary Mangan) with his friends from the Tallow choir providing a selection of Liam’s favourite hymns in the presence of his many neighbours and friends. On Sunday evening, Rosary was again recited by his next door neighbour, Sr Teresa Fraser, who also recited a lovely poem. Funeral prayers were recited by Fr Fitzgerald P.E., his regular companion at ‘The Latch’ who gave a lovely insight of Liam and their many encounters at the dinner table.

Removal took place to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Tallow, pausing at the Carmelite gates, where the Sisters prayed for Liam, followed by a pause at his home. His remains were received by Rev Fr McNamara P.P., accompanied by Fr Pat Condon P.P.

Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday morning by Rev Fr G McNamara P.P., with concelebrants Fr Fitzgerald P.E. and Rev Fr Pat Condon P.P. Beautiful music was provided by Tallow choir under the direction of Mairead Cullinane. Readings were read by Mary Harnedy and Michael Fives. Prayers of the Faithful were recited by Orla Cunningham, Eoin McGrath, Margaret Murphy, Mary Sheridan and Bernie Sweeney. The bread and wine were presented to the altar by Alice Tobin and Siobhan O’Connell.

Following the funeral Mass, interment took place in the family plot. A lovely graveside gesture was provided once again by the Tallow choir when Tom and Dennie and the other choir members gave a lovely rendition of ‘Growing Old’.
