Local fire crews and gardai were called to a blaze at the former Convent building in Mitchelstown on Monday morning at approximately 5.30am.

Members of the Fire brigade battled the fire for over three hours before bringing it under control.

Speaking to the Avondhu, Heritage society chairman Andrew Dineen, said people in the town are rightly angry and hurt at the unnecessary destruction of this beautiful building.
