To watch the flood barriers being put in place in Fermoy during the trial run and at the time of the last flood warning was an interesting exercise to say the least, but what is more interesting is, who will be erecting them on the south side of the town in the future?

At Monday's Northern Committee meeting in Annabella Mallow, county engineer David Keane informed those present that the OPW will be putting the operation of the barriers on the southside out to tender to private companies when the works there are completed.

Needless to say, councillors expressed their fears of the consequences of such a move.

The council themselves will operate the flood barriers on the northern side of the town but due to the embargo on hiring staff they do not have the manpower to operate the barriers in the southern part of the town.

When pressed on the issue, Mr Keane said that the council simply did not have the manpower to operate the barriers on the southern side of the town which has far more flood barriers to put in place.
