“We’ve nothing and they don’t care” – local family on housing list 5 years with no offer of a home

Arthur and Vanessa McDonagh have spent the past five years living in a caravan at Rathcarrig Estate in Fermoy and despite being on the housing list for that length of time, have yet to receive any offer of a house.

Almost two years ago, Vanessa’s daughter, also named Vanessa, was born. Prior to her birth, they claim that they had been promised they would be rehoused within six months, something they has yet to see fulfilled.

Speaking with The Avondhu on Friday last, Arthur explained that there are at least four houses within Rathcarrig Estate which are empty and idle, houses that he alleges have yet to appear on the Choice Based Letting (CBL) system for social housing applicants.

“What’s most annoying is we’re sitting here in this caravan looking at all the empty houses around us. We’re willing to take any one of those houses. There are four houses in this estate that are empty, two three-bed houses and two two-bed houses. They’re all idle and done up like new,” Arthur stated.
