Many may not be aware of the culture or tradition of ‘lifting stones’, the historic practice of lifting a heavy stone in order to prove one’s strength or mettle.

While the practice is generally documented as occurring most predominantly in Iceland and Scotland, one Waterford man is taking it upon himself to locate, and hopefully lift these heavy rocks that are dotted around Ireland too.

Last week, Waterford city’s David Keohan added another successful lift to his list, as he hoisted the ‘lifting stone’ located at Redchair outside Kildorrery. The stone’s existence was discovered with the help of some local knowledge, and perhaps an unseen hand.
