The school transport debacle continues this week, as even though most schools are gone back with three weeks now, locally and nationally children are still being left on the roadside as the failings of the free transport scheme are made glaringly obvious.

In Glenville, there are 18 to 20 students still waiting on school transport. Local councillor William O’Leary has been championing their cause, and in a conversation with The Avondhu this week was absolutely damning of the Minister for Education, Norma Foley.

“I don’t blame Bus Éireann, and I don’t blame the bus inspectors. This is firmly at the minister’s door. There’s no doubt what killed the scheme, and it was handing out free bus tickets. And in ways it’s worse than never having a school bus at all. If you never had it, you’d deal with it, but if you had it, and it was taken away, it’s lunacy”.
