The EPA’s Remedial Action List cites delays in the improvement of supplies in the Burncourt, Tallow and Lismore areas, just three from a total of 109 throughout the country, as 'a concern'. The purpose of the EPAs remedial action list is to focus attention on resolving the most serious deficiencies to these supplies.

Over two thousand residents on the Burncourt supply, have been waiting patiently for the construction of new water treatment plant. While the wait goes on, we have been informed that the installation of turbidity and chlorine monitors have been completed as an intern measure.

Down Tallow way, residents there are also on the list due, we are told, to elevated levels of THMs (chemicals that may form when chlorine is added). These THMs are above the standard in Drinking Water Regulations. The proposed action programme there is the upgrade of the water treatment plant to include provision of new rapid gravity filters. Their near neighbours in Lismore also suffer from elevated levels of THMs.

It will come as some solace to these three communities that their plight is being viewed with some concern and the move by their senior engineer to assure them that these THMs are not dangerous and will not to making people sick etc. They are further assured that should any threat to their health arise, they will be immediately advised by Irish Water and the EPA.
