Vintage silage harvesting in Mitchelstown

A fan of the old ways is Mitchelstown dairy farmer, Kevin O’Brien from Gurrane – situated a short distance outside the town on the Limerick road.

Kevin’s farm was the setting last Saturday for a day long silage harvesting operation.

One of the main men was Kilbehenny native, Tom O’Donoghue, who, when he’s not cutting silage, runs a successful business in London.

‘Cutting silage’ is a relatively modern means of providing fodder for cattle – previous generations used hay to sustain their livestock during the winter months.
