A bronze award in the World Beer Cup for brewing company Eight Degrees from Mitchelstown will 'immediately open up export opportunities' for the small company.

The World Beer Cup held in Colarado is thought of globally as the Olympics of brewing within the industry and there were more than 4,700 entries from 1,403 breweries across 58 countries, so this bronze award is a huge achievement for co owners Scott Baigent and Cam Wallace. The head brewer at Eight Degrees, Mike Magee, travelled to Denver to accept the award.

This is an amazing achievement for such a newly established brewery, but since Scott and Cam first started Eight Degrees, they have been making waves in the industry with new and innovative brews, while their business has grown and expanded.

“The award is massive for us and will immediately open up export opportunities, including the United States. We never dreamed that a small three-year-old independent Irish craft brewery could achieve an accolade like this," Scott Baigent said.

Last September, Eight Degrees brewed Amber-Ella for the Irish Craft Beer and Cider Festival and it is this product, which nabbed them the bronze award, for one of the most hotly contested categories, the American-Style Amber/ Red Ale category. The win is even more admirable given that the Mitchelstown brewery entered their Irish product into one of the two most sought after American style categories in one of the most prestigious beer awards in America.

Amber-Ella, made with American and Australian hops and balanced with malt tones, was also named as one of Beoir's 2013 'beers of the year' and it will now become part of the core range for Eight Degrees, along with their other award winning brews Howling Gale and Irish Pale Ale.
