News of a €625K fund for 'town development' is a welcome boost for the three main towns in the Fermoy Municipal District - Fermoy, Mitchelstown and Charleville.

The money, from Cork County Council, will be spent over the next five years with Fermoy receiving the lion's share (€265,000) due to the flood relief works. Mitchelstown will get an injection totalling €185,000 while a further €175,000 will go to Charleville.

The scope of the Town Development Fund will focus on three areas with each town; enhancements to public realm, support to business/partnership structures, and painting schemes.

€80,000 will be spent this year in Fermoy and the work will include a badly-needed canopy for the bandstand in the town park, CCTV to be installed on the quays, an upgrade of lighting and footpaths on MacCurtain Street and a programme of painting etc.

Mitchelstown's Lower Cork Street is to be enhanced by a tree-planting programme. A number of decorative lime trees will be planted at a cost of €15,000 with a further €5,000 going to support business/partnership structures in the town.

€25,000 will help Charleville secure a new footpath at Farmgate and €5,000 will go to support business/partnership structures.

All the projects in the pipeline would seem to be more than worthy of attention and no doubt, will be welcomed by all civic-minded people!
