WOULDN'T NEED TO GET THE HUMP OUT HERE! Thomas Fitzgibbon completed the gruelling desert ultramarathon in 43 hours, 47 minutes and six seconds.

Glanworth local Thomas Fitzgibbon, undertook an incredible feat this month as he took part in a gruelling six-day ultramarathon in the Sahara Desert, the Marathon Des Sables.

Marketed as ‘the toughest foot race on earth’, Thomas decided to take on the challenge as a fundraising effort in memory of his good friend and fellow Glanworth native John Pierce, who passed away suddenly in June 2021 due to Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (SADS).

Speaking with The Avondhu, Thomas noted that preparations for the Marathon Des Sables began well in advance of flying out to the Sahara Desert.

“I first registered in January of 2020 so I’ve been getting ready for the bones of two years,” he said.
