Lots of small steps were taken this week as children from all over the region commenced their primary school careers.

Tears were few and far between as junior infants settled in to their new surroundings in ‘big school’.

The numbers enrolling are important for schools and in The Avondhu region even small rural schools have a healthy intake of new recruits.

Kilmagner National School (outside Fermoy on the Tallow road) is a small school with a big reputation when it comes academic achievement.

On Wednesday morning, this progressive establishment welcomed: Colm Meaney, Michaela Moloney, Daniel Feehan, Lorcan Noonan, Abbie Leahy and Isabelle Crowley.

A range of activities were laid on for the super six, who are in the care of Sarah O’Farrell from Watergrasshill – for Sarah, the last day of August marked her first day teaching in Kilmagner National School.
