“They underestimated the Glanworth women” – retirement group 17 years on the go

The willpower of Glanworth women was surely underestimated some 17 years ago when Glanworth Active Retirement was first set up, as, despite being told they wouldn’t last, the group is still going strong to this very day.

Set up by Mary McNamara, Maura O’Neill and Fr Donal Broderick, who was parish priest at the time, the group got going after they noted a lack of groups and activities for older people within the community.

At the time, Mary recalled, they were told the group wouldn’t last, however, on Wednesday, February 27 last, they marked their 17-year anniversary and are still going strong, with between 30 and 40 members attending their fortnightly meet-ups.
