‘These villages will die a death’

Local councillors earlier this week contended that housing issues across north Cork were being caused by a lack of capacity at wastewater treatment plants, speaking particularly about issues in Glenville and Glanworth. Councillors foretold doom to rural settlements unless the issue was fixed imminently.

Saying that ‘these villages will die a death’, councillors focused on housing shortages as a consequence of a lack of investment in water treatment.

The council’s official response is that Uisce Éireann is ‘solely responsible’ for the building and maintenance of infrastructure like wastewater treatment plants in the likes of Glenville and Glanworth as well as across the country, as local authorities now have no involvement in water issues as of September 2023.
