Tánaiste Micheál Martin was on the outskirts of Midleton last Friday with the mayor of the county, Cllr Joe Carroll, as they officially opened the infrastructure development which will eventually support the building of 2,500 houses, three schools, a neighbourhood centre and railway station, along with three public parks, over 18 acres in Water Rock.

Cork County Council acquired about 30 acres of land in the area to facilitate the infrastructure development and 1.7 kilometres of link roads have been worked on, as has landscaping, public lighting and surface water drainage.

Cork County Council has purchased approximately 18 acres of land within the Water-Rock Urban Expansion Area to develop three public parks in tandem with the proposed housing. The local authority is working to progress the Water-Rock Linear Park located along the Owenacurra River to the east of the site.

In parallel, the Council is working with the support of government funding to construct the Midleton to Youghal Greenway and complete the interurban cycleway connectivity from Cork to Midleton.

The road is an important part of the Water-Rock Urban Expansion Area and planning permission has already been granted for 1,400 homes in the area; some of this building has already started.

The Water-Rock Local Infrastructure Housing Activation Fund initiative won the award for Best Innovation in Urban Planning at the 2023 LAMA Awards.
