A recent seminar by motivational speaker, writer and endurance athlete Gerry Duffy, attracted a large crowd of students and parents at St Colman’s College, Fermoy this week. The joint parent-student seminar by Mr Duffy dealt with the importance of self-belief and challenging oneself to be the best one can be, as well as constantly raising the standards by which people do things.

He spoke of his own experiences in participating in and organising endurance sports such as DECA-Iron Triathlon – where competitors are required to swim 24 miles, cycle 1,160 miles and run 262 miles. “The things we aspire to in life”, said Mr Duffy, “have already been done or created by people no smarter than you or me”.

He believes happiness comes from growth, and constantly stressed the importance of self-belief and potential in all. He added: “To become the best we can, sometimes just involves a simple plan. But simple doesn’t always mean easy.”

Concluding the evening, St Colman’s principal Veronica O’Donoghue thanked everyone for attending and related how much the college staff benefited from a previous talk by Mr Duffy. She hoped that the novel idea of holding a joint parent-student seminar would have mutual benefits to exam students and their parents in understanding and setting targets and goals for their exams next year.
