Local Waterford councillors have raised serious questions regarding wind turbines and the plans to construct a number of wind farms in the area.

In The Avondhu area, a 12 turbine, 34-megawatt wind farm is currently being constructed in the townlands of Toor and Liss in Ballyduff Upper, and is due for completion in the second quarter of 2015.

Tallow councillor, John Pratt, told the September meeting of Dungarvan/Lismore City and County Council that ‘we could genuinely never foresee the amount that would be on the horizon’. He said the issue comes back to tourism as such farms would ‘be a blight on the lovely countryside’.

Cllr Declan Doocey questioned the efficiency of wind turbines and asked do we need them in the locality. Similar to Cllr Pratt, he said his problem with the turbines is their height. “You’re talking about 120 metres and that’s absolutely crazy. Putting up turbines of that height, the skyline will be blighted.”

There has been much protest over the proposed Eirgrid scheme in the county, and Cllr James Tobin believes that if wind turbines become a norm in the area, ‘as sure as night becomes day’, Eirgrid will follow. “We have to take on the whole package,” he said.
