Six local girl guides from Mitchelstown and Kilbehenny will receive the Gold award this weekend in Dublin from the President of the Irish Girl Guides, Maureen Dillon.

Leader Liz Downes, explained that the girls have all done very well to be awarded this very prestigious award, as this is the highest award in guiding.

In order to get these awards, the girls completed a number of compulsory and optional challenges ranging from outdoor activities and working in the community to completing health and fitness related activities and discovering what the Guide Promise and Law means to them.

The girls getting the awards in Dublin this Saturday, September 28, are Becky O'Donnell, Jessie Sheehan, Aine Keane, Ciara Sheehan and Courtney O'Connor, all from Mitchelstown and Maeve Lewis from Kilbehenny and Liz extended her warmest congratulations to all of them.

Liz said that it is even more admirable that these girls found time for guiding while also dedicating time to their school work and hobbies.

"By working toward their Gold award, the girls learn new life skills that will help them to become leaders in their communities and neighbourhoods," Liz said.

She added that as well as working on their own activities, the girls also worked with younger members to support them, and they would have planned and organised activities for other members.
