For local GAA followers, Fermoy was the place to be on Sunday night as the town revelled in glory following the intermediate hurlers' county championship win by a single point over Charleville.

By his own admission, 'a Hail Mary effort', Paudie Shanahan's point deep in injury time from around the 50/55 metre mark was the difference in this pulsating clash that went down to the very last strand of the wire.

The atmosphere in Pairc Ui Chaoimh was electric as those in attendance were treated to a game that, from a Fermoy perspective, had it all - energy, intent, courage, no little skill and a finish that left spectators drained but delirious.

Interviewed following the game and when asked about his winning point, Paudie Shanahan who was introduced as a sub at half-time, described it as 'unbelievable'.

“Brian O’Sullivan won the ball. He passed to Darragh O’Carroll and he spotted I was free. It was a bit of a Hail Mary shot, but it went over.”

FIRST COUNTY TITLE FOR SKEHEENARINKY

Meanwhile, 20 or so miles away over the Tipperary border in Skeheenarinky, locals were celebrating their team’s first County Jnr A hurling final win.
